She Returns

Yes, hello, I'm back. Wow, I need to do some dusting, remove the cobwebs...

So, did you miss me? I missed you! No, I did. Honest!

Noticed we're getting a trickle of new tv news lately...but right now, I'm more concerned with how everyone's writing is going. So, answer the following in comments:

1. Are you currently writing? (this had better be a yes)

1a. If you are NOT writing, what is your deal?
1b. If you are writing, what are you working on -- new draft, rewrite, tv, film, etc?

2. Do you see yourself entering any contests or fellowships this year? What is your goal before the end of 2008? What do you want to have accomplished?

Believe me, I know that second question is really tough -- looking ahead is difficult, especially when mired in a draft. But, I've found it important to take stock of where I am and where I want to be over the last month, and there's a pretty wide chasm between the two. I've got some work ahead of me.

Tomorrow, we'll get back to business. I'm also gonna be spinning up some new blogtastic ideas. Stay tuned, as we say...

Heya! Lemme see...

1. Yes!

1a. N/A.

1b. New draft--as of this week! Finishing touches on treatment.

2. I've entered Nicholl and AFF, and that's probably it for the year. As for goals, hmm...I'm working on moving away from "goals," actually. I seem to do much better when I just keep my head down and plug away. How about "new draft completed in a terrific and timely way"?

I am not writing at the moment, because I am supposed to be editing a short film. I say "supposed to be" instead of "am", because I've spent the last 10 days traveling and am about to keel over from exhaustion. When I recover, I'll be back to it.

I have no more writing goals for 2008 except to finish this edit... then write for at least 30 minutes a day, in pre-scheduled slots I write on my calendar.

Welcome back.

1. Yes.

1a. N/A

1b. I have three projects going.

One, my ANIMAL STORY is completed but it's a bit tricky to move forward on this as there are rights issues. But I'm hoping it'll work as a writing sample for now.

Two, a really fun sci-fi kid's adventure. This is a ten page treatment which I am now expanding into a 30-page "scriptment"

Three, a really fun sci-fi comedy that I am collaborating on (first time for me) with a partner. Going up to his place this weekend to hammer out an outline.

My goal for 2008 is to complete a polished draft of the second two projects above, and get representation. Contests are possible -- I don't really believe in them as a means to anything, but the money would be nice.

1) Yes-ish. I've been really swamped but I'm getting back into my script this weekend. It's a drama feature first draft.

2) I entered the Nicholl and I plan to enter Disney. I think I threw my zombie script at a couple of other contests but I can't remember which ones.

By the end of this year I want to have finished my current script and my pilot. I'd love it if an agent or studio was reading something of mine, but I know better than to promise myself that.

David--

Just read your article in the new CS. So jealous! How does one get published in the premiere screenwriting magazine? (I guess graduating from UCLA doesn't hurt, huh?)

1. Always.

1b. Title is "How To Get Out Alive." I'm using the TV shows "Survivorman" and "Man vs. Wild" as a launching off point for what I like to call "an intelligent action thriller." But I have no delusions about this being anything more than a total B picture.

2. Probably won't make any deadlines for contests, but I'll certainly be submitting it to Julie and the Script Department for feedback. There's lots I want to finish by the end of the year. It would also be great to eventually find a way to move from Portland down to L.A.

1. If brainstorming pilot ideas counts, then yes.

1.b. See above.

2. Hitting everything hard this year. So far have applied to Nicholl, AFF, Scriptapalooza and at least a couple of others that I've forgotten about. Going for Writers On The Verge, Disney and Warner Bros.

My goal is to get SOMEWHERE by the end of this year. Or be somewhere ELSE a year from now, knowing that I gave it my best shot.

1. Writing new weird espionage pilot and a one act with 14 possible titles.

2. Just hit NBC and Austin, will hit ABC/D Expo and probably Slamdance.

Welcome back!

1. Yes! For the first time in too long. This long holiday weekend is my window to complete a mini-treatment and a scene breakdown for a feature spec. Then I get to give it to people to poke holes in (gulp!) before I settle into the full treatment.

2. Argh, I don't really know. I guess my first and foremost goal for this year is to have a new script that I'm jazzed about and that can serve as a calling card for my writing. Anything else is gravy.
