A brief explanation of the watch list:

Cancelled (new) shows - these are CONFIRMED freshman cancelled shows (or as close as we can get to confirmation).

Shows likely to be axed - their numbers aren't good, news stories point to it being yanked, it may soon end up in the cancelled category.

Ordered full season - this doesn't mean it is renewed for next year, just that the series has gotten a full season order. (e.g., 'back nine' pickup).

Likely pickups - the numbers are good, all we need is the confirmation from the network (again, this is for full season orders, not renewals).

New shows on the air, no decision - consider this the neutral zone, detailing the premiere dates for new shows and tidbits of info which could forecast a move to another category.

Renewed - Will be back next season.

Veteran show death watch - they've been on the air and their time may be coming. We watch and wait...

Happy Hour (Fox) -- needs support

Justice(Fox)-- ditto

Vanished (Fox)-- I haven't seen one episode.

Standoff (Fox)-- I'm sorry, but get the girl a nose job.

Til Death (Fox)-- Funny but miscast.

Jericho (CBS)-- has potential if it goes to reality and not melodrama.

Shark (CBS)-- shite. Needs to be hosed off.

The Class (CBS)-- haven't seen it. No desire to do so.

Smith (CBS)-- I have 2nd episode post-pilot depression. Needs work.

Heroes (NBC)-- There are moments, but they are few and far between.

Kidnapped (NBC)-- haven't seen it. No desire to do so.

Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (NBC)- potentially brilliant, still has a few rough edges to knock off.

Friday Night Lights (NBC) (Premiere 10/3)

20 Good Years (NBC) (Premiere 10/11)

30 Rock (NBC)- I have no clue on this one.

6 Degrees (ABC)-- yuck!

Men in Trees (ABC)-- Ladies, you deserve better than this propaganda.

Brothers & Sisters (ABC)-- self-indulgent/important yuck!

Help Me Help You (ABC)-- We are not amused.

Ugly Betty (ABC)-- I'm actually looking forward to this one.

The Nine (ABC)-- But is it a SERIES?

The Knights of Prosperity (ABC) - I think it will die quickly. Hopfully of a sucking chest wound that is very very painful.

Runaway (CW)- I haven't seen it yet.

The Game (CW)-- ??????????

CABLE:
Dexter (Showtime)- BRILLIANT! Online now! Go check it out.

Justice is not in the "likely to be axed" column.

Juding from your placement of Seventh Heaven and Gilmore Girls on verteran deathwatch, you're probably going to have to put every previousl existing CW show on deathwatch (because they're all down from last year...Smallville, Supernatural, etc) or reconsider those two.

Shawna said...

m -- I disagree. Supernatural actually has picked up in the 18-49 from last season, so it is far from a death watch. I'll have to keep a close eye on Smallville before I make that judgement. My choice of 7th Heaven and Gilmore Girls isn't just based on ratings -- these shows are very long in the tooth. 7th Heaven barely made it back to the schedule, and Gilmore Girls has a new showrunner, and unless it can pull out some kind of rebirth, I am skeptical about its ability to survive anoter season. I do think the CW has some problems, however. Their biggest show is a reality program, and their new scripted program Runaway is pretty horrible. As a program executive over there, I'd be putting a lot into development for midseason and next season right now.

I don't think LG or AB will renew their contracts anyway. Regardless of ratings, I think this is GGs last year.

Seventh Heaven, yes, just barely got back on the schedule, but it wasn't initially cancelled for ratings but for cost. If I recall correctly (and I may not) it was the WB's highest rated scripted the last couple of years.

Perhaps its inclusion is warranted, but I think it's for this reason: as a high rated show, once the CW thing was decided it may have been decided that the cost of one more year was worth it to carry viewers over to the network. Once that job is done, they'll once again pull the plugs on the basis of cost and not ratings.

Yeah, Runaway was DOA.

Nonetheless, glad to see return of the watch list.

My 2cents on a couple shows for the CW. Jeez, still have a difficult time saying the "CW"...okay that's twice, maybe I'm making progress).

Gilmore Girl:
Puts another nail in the coffin every week. We say where not going to watch but then like a car wreck we watch Lauren Graham painfully read a drool script. At least once in awhile Alexis Bledel actually cares this season, not sure where she was at last season.

7th Heaven:
I can't believe it's not butter; cause someone keeps churning it out. How or why, I have no idea.

Supernatural:
It's getting good. My wife writes enough FanFict to publish an anthology and as good as she is at adding depth to the characters (a little biased on my end), the characters are getting deeper and deeper on the show as well. It's going to hang on for a couple more seasons, it has a huge fan base Down Under, and to bad there broadcasting is behind and there reviews don't count for much.

Smallville:
Their season always starts out slow (bucking the hit it big in the first 6), but the addition of the Green Arrow is great! Justin Hartley r has depth and does a great job. After his failed series, “Aquaman” (I never got a chance to see), I’m glad they got him on the tube. They did provoke me to rant over last week’s episode, which was good till they took an easy out on their turning point (insert blog plug here). Now if they would only kill of Lana Lang I'll know dreams can come true!

Veronica Mars:
Hmmm... still haven't watched it which isn't good since my sister works on the show... I have heard good things for this season, but I don't think it's going to make it much longer.

I am deeper then that but I really like some of the shows on the [gulp] CW.

Hi Shawna,
I don't think I ever thanked you for putting up the TV show info. I don't watch much TV anymore--it's just too hard on my mental digestive system. But, I do appreciate a site like yours. I like to keep up with what those TV people are up to without inflicting their content upon my poor self :)

Thanks for keeping us up to date, Shawna. This is great stuff, and though I try to scour through the trades, I don't do the compare and contrast analysis you're doing here. So, thanks!

The Energizer Bunny of 2nd tier shows?

Thanks Shawna

Chad honey, I hope you know that was a compliment. I personally have loved 'Crossing Jordan' since the first season and hope it continues. I just know that Mr. Reilly seems to have something against Las Vegas and Jordan.

I'm sorry, but Mr. Bill Cunningham needs to try watching "The Class" before simply stating "No desire to do so." You are one of the reasons the best comedy since Seinfeld might actually get canned after one season (a season that is three episodes short, if you ask me). This show is absolutely BRILLIANT! I haven't laughed out loud while watching a comedy in a very, very, very long time. Don't get me wrong, there are shows like "Ugly Betty" that are very good, but nothing touches "The Class" when it comes to straight-up funny-ass comedy. The cast has fantastic chemistry, the writing is intelligent and demonstrates the quickness of wit reminiscent of vaudeville. Personally, I LOVE this show, and I haven't talked to a single "Class" viewer who hasn't had the same opinion. CBS would be remiss not to bring this show back for several more seasons. Given the opportunity, this show can make it...no, it will make it. Canceling this show would be a tragic mistake. It's not like CBS has much going for it anyway, and the jejune "Rules of Engagement" is up against both "Heroes" and "24." Not a good idea...

I also agree that "The Class" should be renewed for another season. At least make it a mid season replacement. I also enjoy the new show "Rules of Engagement." My wife actually stays up later in order to watch "Rules of Engagement."

I typically turn off the TV when "The New Adventures of Old Cristine" aires. The show just drags and is not really that enjoyable to watch.

Hopefully CBS will give these two shows another season to prove themselves (Typically comedies take a couple of years to build an audience...Cheers, Seinfeld, etc...)

I do agree that Till Death appears to be mis-casted. Rules of Engagement is basically the same idea but is bult around a stronger cast.

"Justice" should have been given a longer chance or a new night. There were several people in my office that would talk about that show after it aired (water cooler chats). Typically, that is a good sign for a show.

I thought "3 lbs" was let go to early as well. Finally a medical show that did not focus on death each episode. Alas, CBS pulled the plug to soon.

In the age of cable, the networks seem to push numbers and I do not believe they get an acurate summary of who actually watches their shows and the total number of actual viewrs each night. In the age of cable, your are not going to have your ratings like in the 70's and 80's, so they should focus on other things, such as write in campaigns, tivo stats, blogs, etc... T

here have been some great shows in the past that have been canceled but have done well when released on DVD (Firefly, The Family Guy). Sometimes a network will bring back the show, sometimes not.

Man I liked Wedding Bells...it wasn't awesome but it was fun!

How could Andy Barker be cancelled already? It's one show that's actually funny.

It started out paired with Raines, then everything's all over the map for three or four weeks, I watched two back to back episodes Saturday night, then it's cancelled already?!

How could enough people even know about it to watch it? I don't know, this throwing stuff at the wall looking for instant gratification from water cooler talk based ratings doesn't cut it, does it?

People will just quit trying to figure out whether what's being thrown at the wall is worth the effort to watch.

Just totally random viewing to match the programming.

Thanks for your updated list, shawna.

Shawna, who's reporting that Raines is canceled?
FutonCritic has it "To Be Determined".

Shawna said...

USA Today had it listed as 'cancelled'. Of course, it is possible they could keep it for midseason next year, but I think the chances of it getting a spot on the fall schedule are unlikely.

I don't doubt that it's canceled, but people I was talking to wanted to know why I was so sure.
And for some reason "Shawna said so" meant nothing to them.

Standoff has been moved to "Canceled". Will they still air the remaining episodes in June?

And if you didn't know what Blood Ties was, you're not reading enough Dead Things On Sticks.

I can't believe ABC cancelled "What About Brian." I think it was a great show with a decent story line. I think "Caveman" is going to tank. I wish they would keep "What About Brian "on a little longer, I think it had all the potential to be the next "Melrose Place."
